Hassan, the Kite Runner

At the end of chapter 7, Amir witnesses the attack and rape of Hassan after Hassan has run down the final kite of the tournament for Amir. Why doesn't Hassan give Assef the kite? Why doesn't Amir step in or help? What is Amir thinking as he witnesses this horrible act of abuse? Discuss your opinion of Amir's actions AND your opinions of Hassan and his actions.

Comments

  1. Hassan does't give Assef the kite because he believes that Amir won it fair and square, still being loyal. Amir doesn't step in or help because he is afraid of Assef. Although I believe he should have done something, I can understand where he's coming from. He didn't know if Assef would do the same to him, or worse. After all, Assef shows traits of a sociopath. I don't know if I could do what Hassan did in this scene. I can't decide if his actions were very respectable, or slightly idiotic.

  2. Hassan is too nice of a character. He refuses to give up the kite because he is so loyal to Amir. Hassan knew that not relinquishing the kite would result in him getting beaten, but he cares to much to disappoint Amir. When Amir walk upon the scene, he is first to scared to step in. He fears what Assef will do to him, and is in total shock as to what will happen to Hassan. When Hassan was raped it was so much for someone as young as Amir to step in and handle it. I believe Hassan should've given up the kite. The society he was brought up in teaches him to prioritize his loyalty to Baba and Amir before his own well being. Hassan is too kind for his own good, because he would always stand up for Amir but didn't protect himself. Amir should have stepped in. The fact that there was another witness may have been enough to prevent Hassan from being raped, but most likely would've led to them getting beat. Amir could tell that Assef's friends were in fear before Hassan was raped. Everyone in the situation was uncomfortable except Assef, who is truly wicked. Hassan and Amir should've taken different action to change the situation, but they cannot be blamed because they are only children and should never be in that situation.

  3. Hassan does not give Assef the kite because he is so loyal to Amir. Hassan promised Amir that he would run the last kite for him and bring his trophy back. when Amir went out to look for Hassan, he saw Assef and his gang cornering Hassan in the Ali. Amir did not say a word and did not try to stop the conflict. this lead to Hassan getting raped because he did not give up the final kite. I believe Amir could have done a lot more in his situation. If one of my best friends was cornered I would try my best getting them out, I wouldn't stand there and watch. I believe Hassan did what he could, he wanted to stay loyal to Amir and that is exactly what he did.

  4. Hassan chooses to not give up the blue kite because he knows how much it means to Amir for him to have the kite that had helped him win. He told Amir that he was going to rubn it down for him and he wanted to keep that promise because he is a loyal friend. Amir didn't step in to help Hassan because he is a coward. Amir knows how much Hassan has helped him in the past from getting picked on or even beat on, Amir just didn't have the guts to step in and help and once he saw everything happen he froze up and didn't really know what to do. He was frightened and was freaking out and wanted to hide away. He felt so guilty that he was kjust watching and wasn't helping out his friend. I don't agree with Amir's actions at all, I think that he should've went in and helped him otherwise that brutal abuse would not have happened, then when Amir was acting like a bad friend I thought it was selfish. Hassan hardly came out of his room for a few weeks, which is understandable but when he came out and wanted to play with Amir and Amir treated him poorly and told him to go away I felt bad for Hassan. If ii were in Hassan's shoes I would have most likely been the same way, I wouldn't have left my room for a while. If my best friend then set me up to get me kicked out of the house I would've went along with it too, because I would know it would keep going on and Amir would keep setting Hassan up. They had to separate because Amir felt to guilty for his actions and not stepping in for Hassan and every time he saw Hassan it reminded him of how big of a coward he is.

  5. Hassan keeps the kite because he promised to bring it back to Amir and because he ran it down so it was rightfully his. Amir is scared to step in because he doesn’t want to get raped or beat the way Hassan did. As Amir witnesses the rape he thinks about the good times when he and Hassan had fun together. I think that Amir should have stepped in to help, or at least gone to get someone else that would help. I think Hassan should have given up the kite because Amir doesn’t deserve it but I understand why he kept it. To Hassan the kite was a symbol of who he was and by not bringing it back to Amir, Hassan would be disappointing him.

  6. Hassan did not give up Amir's kite because of his unwavering loyalty to Amir that he has always had. I think that Amir was simply to young and scared at the time when Hassan was raped, and he was thinking that he did not want the same thing happening to himself. I think that Amir could have at least done something, or anything like shout at them to draw them away, or got help, or even had thrown a rock to Assef. Anything would have been better than nothing at all. In my opinion, I think that Hassan should have just gave up the kite in the beginning to Assef, because Amir was not worthy of Hassan's loyalty.

  7. Hassan doesn't give the kite to Assef because he wants to be loyal to Amir and bring it back to him for his win. Amir didn't step in because he didn't wan them to think he was friends with a hazara and he didn't think he could help Hassan. Amir was think about all the good thought that he and Baba or Hassan have done together while he was watching Hassan get raped. I believe that Amir should have stepped in and helped Hassan because of what Hassan does for him and just because that is horrible and a terrible thing to do to another person. I believe that Hassan should have just gave him the kite and told Amir and Baba what happened.

  8. Hassan does not give the kite to Assef because he knows how much the kite means to Amir and how happy if would make him to have both won the tournament and have the blue fallen kite. Hassan is too loyal to Amir to give up the kite. Amir does not step in to help Hassan because Amir is a coward and afraid of both getting hurt and what Assef might do to him. Amir is trying to get his mind off what is happening to Hassan and to think of better times. I think Hassan’s actions are admirable, but that he should have given up the kite to Assef. I think Amir should have stepped in to save Hassan. Trying and losing a fight with Assef would have be better than just letting Hassan get raped and not doing anything about it. Amir is a coward and does not deserve Hassan’s loyalty or friendship.

  9. Hassan didn't give up the kite because he cares for Amir and he knows how much the kite means to Amir. Amir does not step in to help Hassan during the rape because he was scared that Assef was going to do it to him. Amir didn't know what to think when it was happening so he just stood there and watched. I believe that Amir should've stepped in and helped because this potentially could've never happened if he did. When Hassan didn't come out of his room for a couple weeks after it happened he finally came out and wanted to play with Amir. Amir treated him horribly and told him to go away. I believe that is not right to do and Amir should've handled it a different way.

  10. Hassan keeps the kite because he borrowed it from Amir and he searched for it and he believes that it is his fairly because he went and chased it down. Amir was also scared because she doesn't want to become one of Assef's rape or abuse victims so he didn't step in. while Amir was witnessing the rape of Hassan all he could think about was the good times that they shared. I think that he should have came in and helped or told someone that should have done somethings about this problem. If he would of never returned then kite back to Amir then they would not trust him anymore.

  11. Hassan doesn't give Assef the kit because Assef didn't win it. He believes that Amir won it fair and square. Amir doesn't step in because he is a coward. He is worried about what Assef would do to Amir. Amir thinks about his past and how Hassan grew up with him. How they feed from the same breast and most importantly Hassan's first word was Amir. I believe that Amir's actions were idiotic and cowardly. He could of easily just stood up for Hassan. I believe that nothing bad would have happened to Amir and Hassan once Amir announced his presence. I think if Amir told Ali that he would of told Baba. Assef could be in trouble.

  12. Hassan does not give the kite because he is not only a loyal servent but a loyal friend. He sees Amir as a friend and as a brother. Assef also did not win the tournament and he thinks that the one that gets the kite should only be the winner.

Amir does not step in and help because he is scared he does not want to get hurt, and he is selfish in that question. - However, when he witnesses is he thinks about stepping in but he does not because he thinks about the consequenses. Also he wants to look good infront of Baba, without any bruces etc.

Amirs actions were totally wrong. As a human you should always step in and never fear for youself. Hassan has been so loyal to Amir that I can not even decribe how wrongful it was for Amir to just stand there and watch. - Hassans actions were morally right, and so honest and exactly like every human should act. However, every human needs to be selfish to survive, if he does not see how badly Amir treats him then he is too good to be true.

  13. Hassan doesn’t give Assef the kite because he is evil and cruel not very trustworthy so Hassan keeps the kite. Amir was also scared about being abuse again so he didn’t step in. Assef was the bully in the book Assef raped Hassan in a alley. If Hassan got rid of the kite he probably never get it back

  14. Hassan doesn’t give Assef the kite because he is too loyal of a servant, and too loyal of a friend to Amir. Amir is not only Hassan’s master, but he is his best friend and Hassan looks up to Amir, Hassan would do anything for Amir. The reason Amir doesn’t step in when he sees what Assef is doing to Hassan is because he is too selfish. Even though deep down, Amir looks at Hassan as his best friend, he didn’t step in because at that moment he was looking at his as his servant. I think Amir is terrible for not stepping in and standing up for his best friend. He is a coward for not helping him. Hassan is being Loyal to his best friend. If I were in his situation, I most likely would have gave Assef the kite because of how scared I would’ve been. - Haris Hoffman

  15. Hassan was aware how important it was to Amir to get the blue kite. Throughout the story so far, Hassan has been a devoted and true friend to Amir . Amir was cowardice when Hassan was raped. He was too afraid to get hurt and did not stand up for him when he needed him to. Hassan still remained a loyal servant and best friend to Amir like he always has. The cruelness that Hassan had to undergo is truly uncomfortable and upsetting for readers and characters. No character got any joy or satisfaction from this besides the truly cruel, Assef. Amir should've stood up for Hassan like the many times Hassan did for him.

  16. Hassan does not give the kite to Assef because he is a loyal friend and servant to Amir, and he knows Amir really wants to win with the blue kite. Amir does not step in and help because he is afraid of Assef, which is sad because Hassan did something for Amir. Amir might have been in total shock, not seeing this before, or knowing how he could step in and help. Amir also could have been scared to step in, thinking he might get raped too. I think Amir should have stepped in because Hassan is his friend, and you should always be there to have your friend's back no matter the situation.

  17. Hassan doesn't give the kite to Assef because he knows he and Amir won it fair and square, and he does not want to disappoint Amir by coming home empty handed. The actions by Hassan in this event are honorable, though I could never ask any of my friends to endure that tragedy for anything in the world. Amir in this event want to help Hassan, yet he is too cowardly and does not want to be hurt himself. He is selfish at this point in the story, though it should be reminded that he is only a kid. The ideal response by Amir would be to call out and help Hassan, but he can't bring himself to stand up for even himself.

  18. Hassan does not give Assef the Kite because he is a loyal friend and brother to Amir, he also knows that the kite means a lot to Amir. I do indeed think Amir is a coward for not stepping in and helping Hassan, I cant imagine just watching one of my friends just get raped. I feel like Hassan's actions are justified and right, If I were Hassan I would almost do the same thing if I knew my friend witnessed me getting raped and didn't step in and help, not a very good friend.
